Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay systems will be launched at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes will gain the ability to contest specific rulings made by the official, mirroring the protocol already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, granting the rally to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
