The Trump movement's most illuminating and distinctive instances – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most hazardous, nor stupidest, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. During the period of several weeks, the American president began displaying all observers his intentions for a lavish reception room two times larger compared to the White House and then began independently demolishing the East Wing to construct it.
He has committed acts 10,000 times as bad – the present calculation of fatalities resulting from his reductions to international aid is 600,000 and rising, and recently an analysis forecast his energy policies would kill an additional 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No other president would have risked – truly, no other president would have imagined – independently wrecking significant portions of the presidential residence in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of multiple America's wealthiest, almost all of whom maintain dealings with federal agencies.

As confusing as it is to observe the leader attempt to overturn the old idea regarding democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there is one large group among Americans who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – in older age cohorts almost a majority – who were raised as conventional Protestant believers.
We have observed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we were raised with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they turned a figure of love into a symbol of hostility who blesses specifically the brutality that he criticized in scripture; this has happened more gradually, through multiple decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disturbing in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself
Therefore allow me to outline the Jesus from my childhood, because theoretically Jesus is the center of any Christian faith, and because the quickly increasing segment of Americans could have minimal awareness about him since they are skeptics or agnostics or spiritual independents. I have no problem with any of these traditions, nor with alternative spiritual paths; yet I maintain that contain precious wisdom of substantial value in the Christian story.
It is decidedly absolutely not the narrative of a mighty king appearing; rather, a child comes into the world to homeless parents in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to evade secret police. The child matures in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his teaching concerns compassion for other people, specifically for the impoverished – and not a sentimental love, but tangible care, shown by providing food and sheltering. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to turn the other cheek – not as a gesture of submissive tolerance, but as a means to teach the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever someone steals your outer garment you should give him your sweater as well.
The obvious and straightforward reality that the Jesus from scripture calls for a type of radical love focused on the needy has perpetually caused Christian religion somewhat of a scandalous religion: appealing to the general public, but due to its inherent radicalness needing to be controlled. During the 1950s it was restrained through watering down – Protestantism was so widespread that it practically blessed current circumstances.
A Struggle for the Highest Among Us
So I have been heartened to see the steadfast resistance against Trump develop during the previous year. It has served as significant comfort to help build the campaign that has demonstrated publicly via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated electorate to participate in large quantities during minor elections. We must have to maintain it, and through comparable resolve, with American flags at every demonstration and appeals to the best parts of American history.
